What is biofeedback?

Biofeedback is a method of behavior therapy.

Biofeedback is not been invented by man, there is a fundamental principle of nature: the feedback, the better the response of biological signals. Without this feedback, the man would not be able to exist.

Not only physiological but also psychological stimuli are included in the biofeedback. As long as the rules of the organism is in equilibrium, there is no need to intervene. If the rules interfered, the unconscious body signals are made available again, and so a balance must be made by a technically generated biofeedback signal perception.

The aim of biofeedback

The goal of therapy is to use the biofeedback signal the state of equilibrium to be restored. About the biofeedback device that is practically an external nervous system receives information about the person's physiological state in the form of sound or light signals by which he learns to compensate for the disturbance.

Biofeedback

Galvanic Skin Response (GSR) method, the skin resistance biofeedback

The skin resistance changes synchronously to emotional states that are otherwise not directly perceptible. The galvanic skin response can be derived for example from two fingers and changing acoustic signals audible. With this procedure, the patient can learn to put yourself into a relaxed state. The psychotherapist may use the procedure to do so by perceptions of the feedback signal stressful memories can be seen at his client.

The muscle biofeedback (EMG) activity determines the level of individual muscle groups

For physical therapy is to determine the muscle activity is of great importance, because the motor activity can be used as an indicator of the general level of arousal. By optical and acoustic feedback signals can be learned here, to enable specific motor units or passively influence in the sense of relaxation. EMG biofeedback in rehabilitation is to reactivate battered muscle groups used.

The Respiratory biofeedback measures the respiratory rhythm

There then follows an electronic processing of the signal. The inhalation and exhalation is made perceptible in the form of a rising and falling tone and a light signal. Here, the respiratory rate and other autonomic functions are affected positively.

Brain waves (EEG) biofeedback

With the brain waves (EEG) biofeedback be measured by electrodes on the skull surface, the electrical activity of the brain. The spectrum of the EEG signal is displayed on a screen. The user can exercise by lowering the center frequency of the EEG as a therapeutic target.

The eye (EOG) biofeedback

In this method, the eye movements are measured electrically and thus produces acoustic sound patterns. The user hears the sounds converted into movements of the eyes. The direct connection of the eyes with the CNS, the feedback signal of the EOG biofeedback is very differentiated.

EOG biofeedback is both active and passive use. Active apply the device in the immediate control of symptoms such as with nystagmus. In the application of passive biofeedback tones without active control are harmonizing on the autonomic nervous system. Thus it has a positive effect on diseases with an increased muscle tone (tension headache, Tortiscollis) accompanied by an increased level of arousal, or (high blood pressure, anxiety disorders, psychosomatic), also in Neurology (tinnitus).

The sound patterns generated by eye movements of the patient are extremely varied. With experience, the therapist can be seen to draw conclusions about the background of the disease process and targeted to the product.
